Day 1
Well I'm sitting at my computer drinking a final cup of coffee before setting out on Day 1. It has been an amazing few months of fundraising, training, and preparing for today and honestly it's kind of hard to believe that it's finally here.
Last night I was up late making final preparations on the gear which surprisingly took a long time considering how much I'm bringing... or not bringing depending on how you look at it.
Here is my pack for the next 10 days.

Here is my pack for the next 10 days.
The pack volume is 700 cubic inches... or "Not Much" in layman's terms. Most of the gear is bike related and includes: Spare tubes, patches, pump, and CO2 cartridges. For comfort I have a pair of shorts, tshirt, and flip flops for the end of the day to change in to. I have detergent to wash my bike outfit in the sink. Sunscreen, nutrition, towel, and chamois creme are all that remains.
Lots of people might think the ride is mostly putting in a pair of headphones and jamming out all day blindly pedaling but you might be surprised to learn that although I bring my headphones I hardly used them last year at all. What I found was between trying to keep on route, avoid potholes, avoid traffic, stay hydrated, it's almost impossible to concentrate on all that stuff and listen to music. At least it is not relaxing to do so. It's actually really nice to just get out on the open road and hear the wind, birds, and tires on the road. There is nothing better than the sound of a well oiled chain gliding along gears pedaling down a smooth road. I can't wait to get this thing going!!
The bikes ready so it's probably about time to get going. Smell ya' later.

3 Days To Go
For the past couple months things have been building and building as the 30th gets closer. It's so hard to believe that it's only three days away and still so much to do. For the past few weeks when I get off work at night I come home and start my second job of planning the trip. The fundraising aspect been incredibly rewarding this year but has also been a ton of work. I have enjoyed every minute of it from making the posters to dropping them off by hand to each of the local shops. I sent a packet up to Traverse City Michigan for my cousin to distribute around town and I think there are even some posters floating around in Colorado that my mom put up at the USA Pro Challenge. So all in all the fundraising aspect is in great shape.
However, all that has taken away a little from the insane amount of preparing needed just to complete the ride. Every hours worth of nutrition is planned in advance and mailed ahead to the stopping points. I will carry two days worth of nutrition with me on the bike and rely on my drops for the upcoming days. Packages will go out this week to Harbor Springs and Holland. I'm all done with that preparation and here is what it looks like.
I'll take energy gels, bars and some snacks to get me through the day on the bike. You may not know this but the body can only process a limited amount of calories per hour which means that on a typical day I will be loosing way more calories than I take in. It's like running your car out of gas and only putting enough in to make it the next 10 miles before stopping to refuel again.
The body generally has enough calories on hand to workout at a high level for about an hour. After that you need to refuel or you run out of gas. For this trip that's a scary thought when you are out in the middle of nowhere miles from any people. So the nutrition planning is the most crucial part of the plan.
Outside of that the route is done with the exception of a few tweaks. The "Queen Stage" of this years ride will be Day 7 from Traverse City to Ludington. To avoid some of the major highways I revised the route from last year to go up through Sleeping Bear Dunes Park which added a great deal of climbing to the day. Here is the elevation profile and map.
The climb out of Traverse is a doozy and one that I'll never forget... I call it the Alpe D'Huez of the north! And by gosh it feels like it.
Minus the route and nutrition the bike is in the shop getting a final tune up and then it's all systems go for Friday.
I'm still working hard to get more donations before I leave and trying to make one last push to get as close as I can to my goal.
Knowing that for all this work we can are sending over 40 bikes is an amazing feeling and I'm unbelievably happy to do it. These kids lives will literally be changed forever.

Less than two weeks to go
Wow things are really coming down to the wire now. I would like to start by thanking everyone who has contributed so far. Everyone has been beyond generous and I can't tell you how grateful I am and on behalf of WBR and myself Thank You!
The route is finalized and I will post the map and further details later this week in case anyone is interested. All hotels are booked and I'm happy to finalize details with my dad and wife that will give me a little extra support along the way.
Last year I had some mechanical problems that luckily I was able to fix on the fly. This year I'll have Heather with spare wheels, tubes, etc. up through Escanaba then my dad from Escanaba to Holland where Heather will meet up with us again for the last day.
I also finalized my tire selection by going with the Continental 700x25 Grand Prix 4-Season. With a 330 tpi (threads per inch) this tire will be very supple and comfortable for the duration of the ride yet has a durable sidewall and tread belt to provide good puncture resistance for the entire ride. They are not cheap but I think will be a good selection for the ride. We will see about that as the punishing 1,000 mile terrain will vet any issues pretty quickly.
Well thats about it for now. I am taking the bike into the shop this week for one final check before hitting the road and then it's game time. After all this planning things are really starting to come together.

Get A Grip Writeup
This week Get A Grip cycles did an Awesome write-up on the ride that went out via email to all their subscribers. Check it out HERE!!
Continuing to work on getting the word out about the ride. The sponsors have been great distributing the materials via Facebok, Twitter, and Newletters. I also have posters up at all the area shops.
Hotel reservations are all made except the last night in New Buffalo. I'm having a hard time finding a place to stay that last Saturday night.
Also looking for a good set of tires to take with. Last year I used 23mm Gatorskins which were good but I'm looking for something a little wider possibly a 25mm that would offer a little more comfort without sacrificing durability. There are some parts of the route that take me over gravel roads and it's easy to blow a tire on a sharp stone. Hopefully, I'll have that figured out in the next few days.
Time is running short!

Lake Michigan Training
Well I'm down to less than three weeks to go now. Things are beyond crazy trying to get everything in line by the 30th. This week was very productive. Despite a hectic work schedule I got the flyers distributed to all the local sponsors: Get A Grip, Johnny Sprockets, and Vision Quest. Flyers will go in the mail to Brick Wheels next week. Hopefully the exposure will increase the awareness and donations for the ride!!
Hotel reservations are made for Escanaba and Epoufette and we have started the plans for a mini Bosman reunion in Holland when I go through there on Friday, September 6th. My Aunt Terri and Uncle Fred generously agreed to open their doors to me again to stay with them and host a BBQ that night. I'm already looking forward to that!!
Having a hard time finding a hotel in Milwaukee for the fist night. I guess there is a Harley Davidson convention or something and literally every hotel is booked. :( So we'll see where that goes this week as I keep looking.
Today was a long day of training and another century in the books for the year. It's funny no matter how many you do that last hour never gets any easier. Developing quite a set of biker tan lines. I'll spare the upper body photo but photo and just say that it looks like I'm wearing a permanent white t-shirt all the time with a dark head and arms.
So that's what's going on with the trip. Donations are already coming in and MANY, MANY thanks to all of you who were kind enough to contribute!!!
Last night my mom Judy was tending bar at the Iowa State Fair and offered all her tips to the ride AMAZING!! Thank you so much!! Until next time.

Lake Michigan Circle Tour Progress
Well it's been a long time since my last post. Crazy how the spring and summer catch up with you. Since the spring I have been busy riding, racing and preparing for the fall Lake Michigan Circle Tour. Last year's ride was an epic adventure and this year I have been busy trying to make this years event bigger and better.
I have been working to involve sponsors who can help spread the word and builda larger audience for the ride to try and bring in more donations and awareness for WBR.
The sponsors have been great and I am continuing to work with them in the next months as the ride get closer.
I have completed a poster that I will post in the local shops and give to friends and family to post around their places of work and distribute to their friends and family.
Thank you all for the continued support and please help by helping to spread the word about my ride.
